Dear Community Members:

February and March are crucial months for New York’s state budget making process in Albany. As Chair of the Senate Committee on Alcoholism and Substance Use Disorders, I’ve been actively advancing bills to protect and support those struggling with addiction.

I participated in a number of budget hearings to examine Governor Hochul’s proposed budget and gain insights from state officials and advocates. I also had the opportunity to engage in virtual forums in both the Bronx and Westchester, where my colleagues and I listened to community concerns about the upcoming budget. Thank you to all who shared your views – your feedback is essential for our work toward meaningful results for our communities.

My team and I are working hard to impact the state budget before the deadline on March 31st at midnight. Stay tuned for further updates.

In Senate District 34, we have several exciting events coming up this month:

NYC Free Tax Prep Event: This in-person event is geared toward those earning $85,000 or less in 2023 to file their taxes for free with the help of IRS-certified volunteers. Join us on March 22 from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Justice Sotomayor Center for help with your tax filing.

Student Debt Relief Workshops: In partnership with the Education Debt Consumer Assistance Program (EDCAP), we’re offering free workshops to help you manage your student loans. One-on-one sessions are available for both federal and private loan borrowers. Mark your calendar for March 27 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at the United Community Center of Westchester.

Veteran’s Hall of Fame Nominations: We’re looking for nominations of veterans for induction into the Veteran’s Hall of Fame. A ceremony for our honorees will be held in Albany on May 28 at 11:00 am.
